How to Wear Your Sling or Pouch

There are several different positions or holds to carry your baby in, with both the Maya Wrap Slings and Pouches.
The Newborn Carry

This is the best carry for Newborns as they need to have total head and neck support, and thus require a reclining position.

  • Place sling over shoulder with rings resting just below the collar bone.
  • Form a pocket with the sling by holding outer edge and pulling the inner edge up against your belly.
  • Place your infant in the pocket with its head closest to the rings. Support your baby while you pull on the sling's tail until it is holding the baby securely against your body.

Once you have adjusted your sling for the first time for the size of yourself and your baby, as listed above, it will take only second to slip your baby in any time you wish to carry him. Nothing could be more conveniant!

The Front Carry

This hold is great for babies who have achieved greater neck control and who are interested in watching the world around them. I find it best around 4 mos. +.

  • Place sling over shoulder with rings resting just below the collar bone.
  • Form a pocket with the sling by holding out the outer edge and pulling the inner edge up against your belly.
  • Place your baby in the pocket facing frontwards with his legs crossed in a sitting position. Support baby's body and head by resting it against your chest.
  • Tighten sling until it is holding baby snugly and you're set to go!
Nursing

Nursing in your sling is easy, comfortable, and discreet! You can even nurse while you shop this way and no one will be the wiser.

  • Place baby in sling as you would for the newborn hold and position him to nurse.
  • Once baby is latched on to the breast, you can use the tail of the sling to cover yourself for discreet nursing.
The Hip Hold

This hold is perfect for older babies and toddlers. The hip helps to support heavier babies while leaving your arms free to do whatever you please. I would suggest this for babies who are at least 6 months and have good back and neck control.

  • Place sling over shoulder with the rings resting just below your collarbone.
  • Gather the cloth of your sling to the front and open it it to place your baby on your hip.
  • Adjust fabric allowing it to reach as far as your baby or toddler's knees and as high up as the shoulders for a young baby, or if desired, for a toddler.
The Back Carry

This carry is perfect for toddlers. I would not reccomend it for younger babies.

  • Place the sling over your shoulders with the rings resting on the top of your shoulder.
  • Open the sling as you would to place a child in for the hip carry.
  • Once your child is secrurely on your hip, make sure that the fabric reaches up to his knees.
  • Slide your toddler around to your back and pull the rings forward so that they rest below your collar bone.. Try and make sure that the cloth reaches far up their back for support.

This hold is a little bit harder to learn and may take some help from another person until you get used to doing it and how it is supposed to feel. Your helper can spot problems for you that you might not see, such as the sling not being far enough up on baby's legs or back. Once you get the hang of it though, it will be as easy as the other holds. Toddlers really seem to love this one!

All of these holds can also be modified for use with the Maya Wrap Pouch. In addition, newborns can also be carried on the back in the Maya Wrap Pouch.
